Profile of the Department of International Business

The Department of International Business (KMP/DIB) is systematically engaged in researching and teaching in the field of internationalization of business activities. The aim of courses and study programmes we offer is to educate specialists who can hold positions in the top and middle management of companies operating on foreign markets. The Department of International Business has a significant share in both bachelor’s and master’s programmes International Trade and guarantees the bachelor´s (combined study) programme Retail Manager. The DIB also guarantees the minor specialization International Business Strategies taught in English, the minor specializations Retail Business and Commercial Communications taught in Czech, as well as number of courses in the minor specialization International Finance and Business and in the doctoral programme International Economic Relations.

Research activities of the Department cover mainly following areas:

  • International finance,
  • International marketing,
  • International management,
  • International commerce.

The research and scientific activities of the Department of International Business are traditionally linked with practice and international cooperation. Academic staff of the department is involved in various international programmes, namely CESPInternational Business – Central European Business RealitiesM.A. Degree of Globalisation and European Integration and the French postgraduate programme MBA – Master Management et Administration des Entreprises. Most of our teachers supervise courses in English for exchange students at the VŠE. The members of the Department also regularly teach as visiting professors at partner universities across whole Europe but also overseas (China, USA). On the other hand, every semester app. 10 visiting professors come to teach optional courses offered by the Department, including professors from Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, Audencia Nantes, ESCP Europe and others.

The DIB members are involved in a number of major international organizations and international research projects, they also work for editorial boards of national and foreign journals. The DIB supports involvement of its members and doctoral students in international scientific networks, grant projects and their participation in international conferences. The DIB, together with the University of Economics in Bratislava, has been regularly hosting every year an international conference since 2000 with an increasing number of participants mainly from abroad.

The Department of International Business also supports teaching students to connect theory and practice. Our students have a chance to attend courses or lectures of various specialists and to work on real projects under the leadership of representatives of our corporate partners. In the last years the members of the Department conducted several research studies ordered by corporate partners and our teachers also provide consulting for businesses in their specific areas of research. Particularly significant is the cooperation with FIR VSE partner companies and following companies: Škoda Auto, Kantar TNS, L´Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Komerční banka and Plzeňský Prazdroj.
